FTP’s Enterprise Architect Summit 2005

I had a look at some of webcasts from FTP’s Enterprise Architect Summit 2005, and thought I would just post a few lines…

Ted Farrell makes some real good introductory observations on SOA, but ends up as more of a sales pitch. The sales pitch does include a good demo of building an application on services. However in my eyes his demo can be dangerous because it hides the real challenges of SOA. Yes, it shows that the tools to integrate services have come a long way. But this is “only” a tool – not SOA. In my previous post CIO and SOA –PHASE III, I believe Jeff Schneider with his views on the SOA-Phase III illustrates this point excellently.

Gurpreet S. Pall makes a good point of the importance of not making SOA a matter of technology. This is both in the perspective of the internal issues of your organisation, but also the fact that “No business is an island!”
He follows this with a more general talk on defining business processes; defining what capabilities you have, which you don’t have and which you don’t want. He defines the concept of “capabilities”, which I see as a parallel to the concept of a Service in SOA. He went on to talk about different aspects of the modelling issues and how the world of business has changed…

I hope I will get the time to check out the last webcasts at a later time.

I hate spam

Gues I am not the only one… My blog was subjected to spam and I choose to require users to register in order to comment on my posts. However it seems that I am not allowed to send mail from this server :-(.

So, until this is solved I have opened up for anonymous comments until the problem is solved… And until then I guess I will just have to keep tightening up after these annoying spammers..

So feel free to make a comment :-)

CIO and SOA –PHASE III

I just discovered Jeff Schneider’s Blog and have to point you in his direction. Especially these 2 posts I have found particular interesting: CIO’s Aren’t Taking SOA Serious and SOA - PHASE III. This is simply good stuff!

CIO’s Aren’t Taking SOA Serious is a nice little story of an unnamed CIO, who is about to make the mistake I think a lot of CIO’s are making right now. Read it – don’t make the mistake of underestimating the size of a SOA project!

SOA - PHASE III is god picture on how SOA has developed. I couldn’t agree more. And just to feed your curiosity my thesis will be looking at where I see SOA – PHASE IV
I hope to make a post soon on this subject… But until then, look at the posts I have referenced to here..

Another exam over.

I have been taking the course “Enterprise Architecture” and yesterday exam-time. And I am happy to say that I got an A :-)

The exam was based on a report I handed in some time ago. The report is titled “Interaction between EA and SOA”, which hopefully should describe the content as well.

If have used the report to test some of my ideas, and with the grade in mind it was a success. However it also showed a weakness in my work; I am looking at to broad a problem. But then again, to narrow down the problem to the essence, I see this as one of the biggest challenges in writing…

So back to the thesis…
