FTP’s Enterprise Architect Summit 2005
I had a look at some of webcasts from FTP’s Enterprise Architect Summit 2005, and thought I would just post a few lines…
Ted Farrell makes some real good introductory observations on SOA, but ends up as more of a sales pitch. The sales pitch does include a good demo of building an application on services. However in my eyes his demo can be dangerous because it hides the real challenges of SOA. Yes, it shows that the tools to integrate services have come a long way. But this is “only” a tool – not SOA. In my previous post CIO and SOA –PHASE III, I believe Jeff Schneider with his views on the SOA-Phase III illustrates this point excellently.
Gurpreet S. Pall makes a good point of the importance of not making SOA a matter of technology. This is both in the perspective of the internal issues of your organisation, but also the fact that “No business is an island!”
He follows this with a more general talk on defining business processes; defining what capabilities you have, which you don’t have and which you don’t want. He defines the concept of “capabilities”, which I see as a parallel to the concept of a Service in SOA. He went on to talk about different aspects of the modelling issues and how the world of business has changed…
I hope I will get the time to check out the last webcasts at a later time.
